In fire Departments and fire academies across the country there are thousands of men and women training daily to become firefighters or to continue their skill development as a certified fire fighter.

 

All of this training is being performed while wearing front-line gear or an old hand me down set. Therefore, they are training in the most contaminated set of bunker gear available. As science shows the oldest and most used gear is the most contaminated. Even when IDLH protection is not needed for the vast majority of the time spent training in functionally efficient but contaminated bunker gear. This is an entirely unnecessary risk that increases exposures of carcinogens to firefighters that the fire service needs to eliminate entirely.

 

The fire service should aim to provide the highest level of safety to their employees and students.
